We knew it was going to happen sooner or later. Someone would try to scam an online gambling site in the United States and now it appears that the state of New Jersey is the first to fall victim. A woman from New Jersey has been accused of claiming identity theft for $10,000 in online gambling losses. Jackson Township native, Diana Zolla, age 31, was charged last week with theft by deception for claiming someone stole her identity and made the charges.
According to Philly.com, the State Police of New Jersey had been investigating the claim of Zolla since January. She had claimed that an individual used her maiden name as a way to play online gambling in the state. Zolla adamantly stated that she did not rack up the $9,565 in fees but apparently detectives found information that suggested otherwise.
After looking at the information provided by online gambling sites, internet records and banking information, police were able to determine that Zolla was the one who had created the account and lost almost $10,000 online. The gambler has now been arraigned and released and must appear in Atlantic County Superior Court at a later date.
The Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, Col. Rick Fuentes, stated that people who gamble online may be tempted to fabricate an identity theft complaint in order to avoid paying their debt. Fuentes further stated that this type of criminal activity can only make a bad situation worse.
David Rebuck is the Director of the Division of Gaming Enforcement and he stated that the agency will continue to work with police to ‘root out fraud’ and any suspicious transactions are thoroughly investigated and any attempt to defraud the casinos in New Jersey will not be tolerated.
Since online gaming launched in New Jersey back in November of 2013, there have been just over 291,000 gaming accounts created for online game play. The gaming industry continues to grow and expand and officials will continue to monitor the industry in the hopes of avoiding similar situations such as this.
