With a number of legislators stepping out in support of an online poker ban across the board in the United States, one lawmaker has shown his distaste for an online gaming ban. Just a few days ago, Assemblyman J. Gary Pretlow of New York, posted an op-ed with Roll Call, speaking on the proposals for banning iGaming on a federal level as well as mentioning online poker in New York State.
In May, New York saw a bill come forward but this measure will not be moving forward in 2015. MGM Resorts International commissioned a study in 2014 and found that New York residents are estimated to be spending $110 million a year on online poker gaming at offshore sites. The same study showed that the state could earn as much as $50 to $80 million in annual taxes by approving intrastate gaming online.
With such a large population, New York is sure to do well if legislation is passed. Pretlow, a democrat, is the New York State Assembly Racing and Wagering Committee Chairman and recently spoke out on his feelings towards regulated online poker gaming.
In the article, the Assemblyman points out that bills are being considered in New York that would allow for online poker gaming. Discussions of the same subject are also being had in other states across the country. The proposals considered in interested states are responsible and what Pretlow says ‘reflect the very core of what we should be doing’, which is leveraging business opportunities to help the state.
The lottery of New York helps to fund eduation, with $3.11 billion for the 2014-15 fiscal year alone. This amount is 14% of the overall funding in the state to educate more than 2.7 million students. With RAWA, Pretlow points out that online lotteries would be banned which would put the education dollars of the state at risk as well as put more than a dozen other states in the US at risk as well.
