Oleksii Kovalchuk Wins Event #42 of 2012 WSOP

With 393 players competing, Event #42 of the 2012 World Series of Poker had a relatively small field of players. The event was an Omaha /Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8-or-Better tournament with a buy-in of $2,500. The event took three days to complete and in the end it was Oleksii Kovalchuk who earned the first place finish.

By Day 3, the event saw 22 players returning to the felt. The day would begin with Jeff Lisandro as the chip leader. Lisandro was trying for his sixth gold bracelet but it was not in the cards. Lisandro would hold on to the lead until level 20 and by this time several players had been eliminated. By level 21, Norman Chad held the chip lead by taking a large pot from Tom Schneider. Schneider would be eliminated very soon followed shortly by Bryan Devonshire, Perry Friedman and Lisandro.

After Lisandro exited the tournament, nine players would move to the Pavilion room for the unofficial final table. Brandon Guss was eliminated quickly and this would leave the final table ready to begin. Play would quickly resume and players would begin to drop.

Heads up play would finally begin between George Danzer and Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk held an almost 2 to 1 chip lead but Danzer would quickly even out the odds and then take the lead. The two would continue to pass the chip lead back and forth until Kavalchuk would earn the lead and take out Danzer.

The final hand would take place in Omaha-8. The two were all in preflop and Kovalchuk showed A-K-9-4 with Danzer holding A-Q-8-2. The flop showed 6-9-J and this kept Kovalchuk in the lead. A King on the turn and a 3 on the river sealed the deal for Kovalchuk and the twenty two year old would earn his second gold bracelet!
