Internet gambling group Bodog, one of the worlds largest in the industry, has officially applied for a UK operating license even though their U.S. operations have come under extreme scrutiny concerning the legality of their activities.
Bodog’s founder Calvin Ayre admits Bodog took bets from US players but also quickly points out that the company does not “operate†there.
“We have licenses from sovereign governments to do what we do – that’s how it works on every other industry on the planet.”
Bodog seems to be going against the grain, as almost all other online casino and poker groups have boycotted the UK regulatory regime due to the remote gambling tax (15%) that was put into effect last year. Bodog is trying to expand its operation into the European market.
Bodog has applied for a remote casino and general betting license and in order to be accepted must pass a “fit and proper operator†test. According to a UK Gambling Commission spokesman, the Bodog online gambling license applications are still pending.
Calvin Ayre wrote in his blog,
“Bodog’s expansion into Europe is an exciting step for the company. Not only does it make sense from a business perspective, but it feels right on a personal level as well. My roots are in the United Kingdom; my grandparents hailed from Scotland and England, and I feel a lot of connection to the UK.â€Â
