Peter Mandelson, the EU Trade Commissioner feels the United States should change a current law that currently discriminates against European companies that would like to be able to offer online gambling in the U.S. market.
“What we need to see is a change in U.S. legislation that removes that discrimination against EU operators.”
“It’s not in the interest of American consumers to have good responsible competitors in this market excluded by regulatory mechanisms,” EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson revealed, being prepared and ready to go over this issue with United States lawmakers in Capitol Hill.
Mandelson believes it takes an intelligent minded and common sense approach to effectively seek change to this problem.
A senior policy advisor with the law firm Alston & Bird, Naotaka Matsukata, feels that Mandelson’s decision to view all legislative options could very well be a major turning point to this ongoing dispute.
Compensation talks have been underway between the European Union and other trading partners, over Washington’s decision in removing gaming services from the market in commitments already established in the 1994 Uruguay Round world trade agreement.
“When a member of the WTO defaults on its commitments, compensation is due. That’s the case of online gambling,” Mandelson said.
