The game of Poker is on its way to Orange Park Florida. It is now official, the town council voted three to two in favor of a poker room to be opened by the Orange Park Kennel Club.
There was a full house for the debate, which was definitely what one would refer to as… heated. Hundreds of people showed up to either share their varying opinions, or just to listen in, or make their votes count, they filled the seats, they spilled out into the lobby, and they stayed, and debated one another, for three hours.
Those against the Orange Park Kennel Club Poker Room argued that the room would increase traffic, increase crime, and that the town would see new problems with gambling addictions.
“Clay County is a safe haven to raise a family, strip clubs are illegal.” claimed Matt Justice
Lisa Grant argued “We’re not talking about bringing Vegas to Orange Park, nobody wants that. We’re talking about good clean poker that is all over the nation,”
The towns mayor, Bob Standifer voted against the poker room, in fact, the mayor called gambling an “insidious cancer.†Perhaps he should visit a cancer ward in a hospital, and see what the patients there think of the analogy, in fact I’m curious myself.
Supporters, who as we know were the majority here by the 3 to 2 in favor results, argued that the new poker room would bring Orange Park new economic growth. Kennel Club spokespersons said that the new poker room will itself create 135 new jobs, this without taking into consideration gas stations in the area, hotel possibilities, convenience stores, an influx of people in the area is bound to bring about new money, and new business.

The debate waged on… for three hours before the Orange Park City Council approved the Poker Room.
After the results were in Michael Munz of Jacksonville Greyhound Racing commented “I think that the mayor offered up a very fair process that we’re very appreciative of. All of our supporters had a chance to speak. Those who were against had a chance to speak. I think in the end a very fair process went on here. We’re very appreciative of that, and of course we are grateful for the outcome,” said Michael Munz of Jacksonville Greyhound Racing.
Some residents from the area also had comments to share after the results were in, they aren’t throwing the towel in yet the residents say, they will fight, and they will find a way to block the opening of this poker room.
