Many recreational players take up satellite tournaments in order to test their skills and luck and try to win a seat at a high buy-in event. The majority never manages to receive passes for those tournaments during their lifetime, but that is not the case with a recreational poker player from Brazil named Paulo Milani. Namely, Milani managed to win a platinum pass for a $25,000 buy-in tournament, not once but twice.
A couple of months ago, Milani was one of the 320 people who received a ticket to the prestigious poker event in the Bahamas called the 2019 PokerStars Players No-Limit Hold ’em Championship (aka PSPC). But he did not stop there.
Only a month after that, he managed to do well once again and won another platinum pass for 2020 PSPC in Barcelona. Now, this is something that really defies statistical probabilities, especially when you are a recreational poker player such as Milani, who really likes playing poker for fun rather than considering it his profession.
Milani won his first platinum pass in an event called All-In or Fold, which was a part of the Brazilian Series of Poker (BSOP). He also wanted to take part in similar contests but was disappointed to find out that there were none in that period.
Nevertheless, as soon as the first tournament awarding platinum passes was announced, he immediately applied. He started searching for options and found Mega Path, which offered a rather affordable way to win.
The Mega Path Tournament
The Mega Path is an affordable satellite that consists of four steps. In the first step, the players had to play through $2 Mega Path Sit & Go’s. Those who won those sit & go events qualify for the second step of the tournament, which involves winning a 27-person 3-handed Shootout.
The third step is a $50 tournament where the best 15 players advance to the fourth level, which is the $1,000 Platinum Pass tournament that takes place on Sundays. Every week, one winner is selected, who receives a platinum pass worth approximately $30,000 that includes travel and accommodation expenses, in addition to the buy-in for the PSPC.
Milani started with the first step. He played well and managed to get to the fourth step and the final table. He said that he didn’t remember any particular hands, but that he remembered playing with a lot of focus, taking it step by step.
He did not manage to win the event, but The Mega Path is designed in such a way that players who make it to the final table get automatically enrolled in the next week’s finale, and that turned out to be crucial for Milani. He took his chance once again and finally received his second Platinum Pass for the tournament in Barcelona in 2020 by topping the event.
The poker enthusiast doesn’t have big plans for the PSPC, as he said he only wanted to enjoy being there and see players he admired on TV live in action.
