In October, the state of Pennsylvania finally legalized online poker and casino gaming, thanks to the passage of a new gaming package. Several areas of the state’s gambling industry are set to expand, including the option of real money gaming online. Apparently, the legalization of such online gaming options was not supported by two United States Senators. Lindsey Graham and Dianne Feinstein sent a signed letter a week ago to the Department of Justice seeking a reversal of the 2011 legal opinion of the Wire Act of 1961.
Both senators signed the letter that was dated November 21st, asking the Trump Administration to stop the progression of online gaming in the United States. Pennsylvania was the fourth state to legalize online gaming and other states are expected to follow suit. In the letter, it states that the senators fear that unless the 2011 opinion is revisited by the DOJ, they predict that online casinos have the potential to spread across the country. The Poker Players Alliance posted a copy of the letter online, sharing the information via Facebook.
In the letter, it states that online gambling preys upon the most vulnerable in society. The senators want to see Congress rule on online casino gaming, but they may not be able to make a decision on the matter. The United States Supreme Court is set to begin a hearing on the Professional & Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 within a case involving New Jersey and sports betting. If New Jersey wins the case, states would be able to offer sports betting without federal involvement. This would open up the path for online casino gaming as well.
Both Feinstein and Graham have shown opposition towards online gaming in the past. For Feinstein, the senator asked lawmakers in California to not legalize and regulate online poker. As far as Graham is concerned, he has been a strong supporter of banning the activity, backing RAWA legislation pushed by Sheldon Adelson.
