Pennsylvania seems to be moving forward with discussions of online poker taking place within the state, with a recent meeting taking place in Harrisburg. A hearing was held last week with industry officials and lawmakers of Pennsylvania meeting to discuss if online gaming will work within the state. Currently, there are two bills that have been introduced within the state that would provide legalization and regulations for online poker, with sites being created by land based casinos.
Casinos in the state would have the opportunity to partner with software providers based elsewhere to provide online poker gaming within the state. Mainlinemedianews.com reported that during the hearing, Jan Jones Blackhurst, the Executive Vice President for the Caesars Entertainment Group, stated that online gambling was already happening in the state without generating tax revenues.
Blackhurst further stated that today’s reality is that online gambling is taking place in every US state, the majority of the activity being done illegally. This has created an environment that is built for fraud and criminal activity and provides no tax revenues for the state. The Caesars official pointed out that the gambling experience online has been successful in areas in which it has been tried and it is important to realize that Internet gaming is here to stay, whether the option is legalized or not.
Pushing for online gaming in the state, Representative John Payne, has stated that more hearings are going to be scheduled to discuss his plan for iGaming in Pennsylvania. It seems as though Pennsylvania is on track to be the next state to legalize online gambling as California, another contender, cannot seem to come to an agreement on how and who should be involved in online poker gaming. It will be interesting to see which state will be able to get it together to become the next to join Delaware, New Jersey and Nevada in online poker gaming.
