A story came out about Phil Laak, the well known poker player, who recently made headlines playing the Canadian AI Poker Program, Polaris, and winning. The story told a tale of greed, and murder, or attempt there of. The tale about how acquaintances turn friends turn business partners parted ways.
Tom Grant, a resident of Thailand, claimed he aided Laak out of a difficult situation after a motorcycle accident. His allegations continue about an export business subsequently began by the two. It has been rumored that the exports were both of a legal nature, and of an illegal nature, neither has been clearly indicated. At the point in which they went into business together, Laak contributed 20 thousand into start up and other costs.
On his website, Grant claims that he discovered a plot that Phil Laak had hired a hit man to kill him over a tax debt of 10 thousand dollars. The strings pull loose when the claimed hit man was allegedly paid 30 thousand dollars to kill both Grant and his wife.
Someone who claimed to be Grant appeared on the 2+2 Poker Forum saying that the export business in reality had nothing to do with religious artifacts, it was instead about smuggling heroin out of Thailand. Bill Rini, a poker blogger, points out i that would explain both the tax and why Laak would pay 30,000 dollars to take out someone to whom he owed far less.
Tom Grant began his website approximately when the WSOP 2007 began play. He made several claims and promises with in his site and on popular poker forums, he would be releasing a barrage of incriminating photos of Phil Laak in his possession. The site has been taken down for update, with no known release or restart date. To date nothing has been released to indicate anything more than disdain and animosity between the men.
From the start of this story, Grant claimed money was not the issue. His asserted intentions were only to make clear who the poker professional truly was. From the outside looking in, this is not what the results turned out to be. Phil Laak compensated Tom Grant an undisclosed amount of money, and Grant, the website and all of his allegations have not been heard since. It currently appears as though the story is over.
