Doug Polk and Daniel Negreanu are among the best poker players in the industry. Both of them also happen to be avid Twitter users, where rumors sparked about a potential heads-up duel between the two. Polk and Negreanu were more than happy to fan the flames.
Many fans didn’t believe that a heads-up duel would happen, and that the two players were only talking empty words on social media. However, the two pros agreed to discuss the parameters of the potential clash, which would be regarded as the most important one of the year.
After a lengthy back-and-forth Twitter discussion, the two players made a deal to play poker against each other, and they even set the starting date for it – November 1.
Parameters for the Duel
The two players will start their duels on two tables with $200/$400 NLHE. Negreanu was eager to hold the event on GGPoker if the tables they agreed upon could be set up. However, he has since officially announced that the duel would take place on WSOP.com.
Negreanu and Polk would play 100 big blinds deep, but there will also be an automatic top-up if someone happens to fall below that. Every session when the two of them meet will last for a minimum of two hours. However, the session could be extended if the two sides agree on that.
Heads-up tables usually deal 150 hands every hour, meaning the match between the two players should last approximately 80 hours, and that could extend even more if they slow the pace down at some point. Once the halfway mark is reached, and 12,500 hands are played, the losing side can wave the flag. Moreover, the players will have an option to raise the stakes further once the duel is halfway through.
Perhaps the most important piece of information for poker fans is that the match will be streamed with commentary. Negreanu mentioned that he was talking to Mori Eskandani and Brent Hanks, content managers for Poker Central, to ensure a broadcast would have commentary. This duel could turn up to be quite a spectacle if they can pull it off, and everything so far points that it will happen.
About Negreanu and Polk
Both Negreanu and Polk are professionals, but they come from somewhat different poker backgrounds. Negreanu was a famous cash player in the 90s when he decided to switch to tournament poker and became one of the best in the game.
On the other side, Polk was a little-known, mid-stakes professional on PokerStars who then discovered that he had a tremendous talent for heads-up games. He was able to beat some of the most successful heads-up players in the history of poker, such as Ben Sulsky.
It’s safe to say that Polk will be playing on the “home court,” given his background, as the two players will face each other in a heads-up duel. However, we shouldn’t neglect Negreanu’s poker prowess either. Stay tuned to our website for additional updates.
