After being rescheduled due to severe weather and then rescheduled again, the Restoration of America’s Wire Act will be heading to a hearing tomorrow. Legislators on Capitol Hill will be listening to the high points of the bill with a list of witnesses now having been released for the hearing. At 4pm local time, the hearing will begin in front of the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security.
Backed by Sheldon Adelson, the Restoration of America’s Wire Act will have the 2011 changes to the Wire Act put back in place, which would put a stop to the online gambling industry within the United States. New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware already offer online poker and casino gaming, which California and Pennsylvania are additional states looking at legislation to enter the industry as well. If the bill were to pass, the existing operations would have to cease and additional states would have to stop their efforts to pass legislation.
Adelson created the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling in an effort to push the RAWA bill and believe that the purpose of RAWA is to stop Internet gambling and protect the rights of families in America. Supporters of online poker and casino gaming believe that the bill is against their rights.
With the hearing scheduled for tomorrow, the list of witnesses to attend has now been released, according to Card Player. The list includes:
- John Kindt Professor of the University of Illinois School of Law
- Les Bernal National Directgor of Stop Predatory Gambling Foundation
- Mike Fagan Professor of Washington University School of Law
- Andrew Moylan Executive Director of R Street
- Parry Aftab Wired Safety Executive Director
After tomorrow afternoon, we have a better idea of what to expect with the RAWA legislation. Information of the hearing should be released, allowing proponents and opponents of online gaming to be able to learn the outcome of the scheduled hearing.
