During the Poker Masters, poker pro Steffen Sontheimer was the front-runner when it came to claiming the Purple Jacket of the series. The player with the most earnings during the Poker Masters would earn this coveted prize and after finishing in 4th place during Event #1 and winning #2, Sontheimer was well on his way to being the top earner of the Poker Masters.
After finishing well in Poker Masters Event #1 and winning #2, the poker pro went on to earn a 5th place finish in Event #4. Sontheimer then won #5, adding even more to his totals with the $1,512,000 first place win.
When Event #5 began, Sontheimer was the top money earner so far. The $100,000 event would be the deciding factor as to if the pro would earn the Purple Jacket or if another player would claim the top prize. During Event #5, the final six players would hit the felt yesterday with Sontheimer sitting third in chips. Fedor Holz held the chip lead just ahead of Christian Christner in second. Holz and Christner would both take turns holding the chip lead before Sontheimer would take over.
Holz, Christner and Sontheimer would be the final three after the first three players were eliminated from the final table. It would take only two hands during three-handed play to see the heads-up matchup begin. Sontheimer would raise from the button which would see Holz move all-in from the small blind. Christner called from the big blind. Sontheimer then folded.
Holz would show Q-J off-suite up against the pocket 7s of Christner. The board ran A-10-2-8-5 sending Holz out of the competition in third place. This left Christner and Sontheimer to compete in heads-up play. Christner had a sizable chip lead but after a few hands, the lead would go to Sontheimer. In the end, Chstiner would move all-in and Sontheimer would instantly call.
Sontheimer held pocket queens while Christner showed pocket 2s. The board ran J-8-3-4-9 giving Sontheimer the hand, the event win and enough Poker Masters earnings to win the Purple Jacket. Sontheimer ended up earning $2,733,000 with his finishes in the Poker Masters. His earnings were far above the next highest total of $1,085,000 held by Bryn Kenney.
