Aftonbladet, a Swedish newspaper, has reported that a twenty three year old poker player is now in custody after he was suspected of taking hundreds of thousands in Krona from fellow online poker players. The suspected poker player reportedly targeted seven to eight victims and conducted over twenty crimes.
An informant is involved in the case and the informant indicated that some of the victims lost several hundred thousand in cash each. The prosecutor in the case reportedly wanted the criminal to be arrested in many crimes which took place in the Gothenburg. The crimes included four extortion cases which took place from June to December 2011 as well as a robbery which took place in December 2011. Another charge was an aggravated robbery/extortion which took place in June of this year.
The blackmailer is accused of threatening a player with a gun to the head. The victim was reportedly forced to go to the Cosmopol Casino in Gothenburg and was forced to take out SED 224,000. The victim was then warned to not go to the police.
The twenty three year old poker player has denied the accusations but he did mention that he won an undisclosed amount of cash at PokerStars which was supposed to be split between him as well as other high profile poker players at the site. The player stated that amount had disappeared and he felt he was jilted.
Despite the fact that the young poker player denied the claims, the detention hearing resulted in the young man being detained in custody for the charges. The District Court found probable cause and now the case will go to court. It will be interesting to see the further details in this case.
