With the ESPN coverage airing this week and a new event in Europe, the World series of Poker (WSOP) and Jeffery Pollack its Commissioner, are ahead of its 5 year plan to modernize the granddaddy of all poker events.
According to Mr. Pollack, “This plan is designed to set the course for the World Series of Poker for the next 40 years by expanding our global footprint with additional events, but also innovating our digital and broadband content, and continuing to add to our sponsorship roster.”
Also adding, “When I got here two years ago from NASCAR, there was no business behind the World Series of Poker. It was a well-established tournament, but there was no strategy to support the growth of the tournament as an intellectual property rights venture.”
Televised poker has grown over the years and with it the WSOP (Owned by Harrah’s) from a time slot fill in to a permanent long term home on ESPN. This from the beginning to the end of this grand tournament now spans a total of 50 days.
One part of the plan will come together next month with the start of the WSOPE. The World Series of Europe will air on News Corp’s Sky TV and Mr. Pollack noted that he is looking at Asia and South America as future tournament stops with an announcement possibly coming within the next 12 months.
“We are taking the U.S. business model overseas and have global television distribution for the event as we build a new tradition in Europe,” Mr. Pollack said.
