The Trump Taj Mahal is expected to shut down after ongoing strikes by over 1,000 of its workers have caused the struggling casino to cut its losses. Representatives for Tropicana Entertainment, who manage the Taj Mahal properrty, are expected to contact the state of New Jersey this week regarding the layoffs that the company will incur. A total of 3,000 jobs will be a lost as a result of labor dispute brought on by workers at the Taj.
Once considered to be the Gambling Mecca (…of sorts) of the East Coast, the Trump Taj Mahal will be closing its doors just after Labor Day, according to multiple reports. Billionaire casino mogul Carl Icahn has chosen to remain relatively silent over the casino he bailed out in 2014 in order to keep day-to-day operations going. In all, he spent over $80 million to save the Taj, which eventually emerged from bankruptcy hell earlier this year in February.
Unfortunately, in the time since he purchased the property, Icahn has refused to give into demands from Unite Here Local 54, the union representing the workers of the Taj Mahal. You might recall that Icahn came in and stripped workers of most of their union benefits and healthcare coverage once the casino recovered from bankruptcy proceedings.
The move saved the company countless millions, but left a bitter taste in the mouths of thousands of loyal employees of the Taj. The battle over health and pension benefits grew heated over the last few weeks, with nothing positive ever coming from the negotiating table.
Bob McDevitt, president of the Unite Here Local 54 union, stated that “the great deal-maker would rather burn the Trump Taj Mahal down just so he can control the ashes.”
Since then, it seems that talks between Tropicana and the union have fallen apart, and with it, one of the most well-known landmarks in Atlantic City is set to fall with it. Once the Taj Mahal officially shutters its doors for the final time, the total amount of jobs lost in AC since 2014 will reach almost 8,000 since the closure of the Showboat, Atlantic Club and Revel Casinos.
