Gambling regulators across the United States have turned their focus from casino and poker gaming to daily fantasy sports. The DFS industry has been a hot topic of debate, especially after the New York Attorney General decided to rule the contests as illegal gambling. Every state seems to be looking at the industry now, including Massachusetts, where DraftKings is based.
Massachusetts is looking to create regulations for the DFS industry, a move that may be beneficial for online poker players. Online poker and daily fantasy sports are considered a form of online gaming, with one gaming official calling for both to be considered with a regulation bill.
The Boston Business Journal spoke with Stephen Crosby, the Chairman of the Gaming Commission in Massachusetts, who stated the state may do well with an omnibus regulatory bill. Crosby asks the question as to if it would make sense for legislature to create an omnibus regulatory bill that would include all new electronic gaming technology, because there is so many of them.
Crosby stated that if a bill could be crafted that included priorities for regulation, as well as fundamental values, etc. that could be applied to all games, DFS, poker, and more, and then an agency could implement it. Then as new technology is created, the agency would then cover the latest technologies and how it would apply to the latest developments and the online gaming industry.
Massachusetts does have a separate measure up for consideration that would allow the facilities that offer gambling in the state to eventually provide online casino games. The state only has one slot casino right now, with Las Vegas style casinos on the way.
Now, it will be interesting to see if the state will regulate DFS contests and if poker will be included in such regulations. Only time will tell if the state will move forward with any legislation and what it might include.
