Months ago, the World Series of Poker was reported to have an alleged incident of cheating taking place in regards to the $10,000 Heads-Up Championship. Several players accused Valeriu Coca of cheating to earn his 5th place finish and the WSOP soon began an investigation after the claims were made.
The WSOP worked with the Nevada Gaming Control Board to look into the matter and has now announced the investigation is complete. The WSOP stated the matter is considered closed and Coca will be paid his earnings for the 5th place finish of $54,545.
Once the WSOP completed their investigation into the matter, the Nevada Gaming Control Board also looked into the incident. The tournament finished on June 4th, earlier their year, and the winner of the Championship event was Keith Lehr. Lehr was able to take down Coca in 5th place and continue to reach the final spot, earning the first place win.
It was days after the tournament that the allegations of cheating arose. Coca stated that the allegations were all fantasy and the players were so good that lost they could not believe they could lose to him. Players in the tournament had accused Coca of marking the game cards with invisible ink. He wore sunglasses during game play and fellow participants felt the sunglasses helped him see any markings on the cards that he made with the ink.
The allegations of cheating did not surface until players who were eliminated by Coca in heads-up play began to converse with each other. Players found similarities in their game play which led them to believe the Coca used some method to move forward in the competition.
In an earlier report, it was found that the cards were tested for such markings and were found not to be tampered with. Both the WSOP and Nevada Gaming Control Board have now found Coca deserving of his winnings and have paid him what he won taking 5th place in the event.
