WSOPC Sydney Opening Event

After a five-hour-long exciting poker game, Jun Wang finally managed to win the 2018 World Series of Poker International Circuit $500 Opening Event. The winner took home a lucrative prize of AUD$112,171 which is approximately $82,500. He came to the final table with the biggest stack of chips and managed to defeat Malcolm Trayner in the heads-up play which was one of the most difficult head-ups in the history of this event.

This year, the number of entries set a new record as a total of 1,444 players participated in the opening event. This is almost 100 participants more than it was last time. The final table included a lot of really experienced poker players such as Zhi Ma and Chad Awerbuch. Some other famous tournament grinders such as George Mitri and Alex Falon were also present in the top nine players.

After an exhausting match filled with excitement, Wang gave a short statement, saying that this was his first final table. He had support from his girlfriend, who started crying as soon as Wang played his last hand and found out that he had won the event. Wang also commented jokingly on this, stating that his girlfriend had actually won more than him.

Furthermore, Wang stated that he also had won a ticket for the $5,000 Challenge Event which would be the next one that he would play apart from the Main Event. Furthermore, he added that he also considers PLO event if the Challenge didn’t go as he had planned.

The final four play was interesting as Trayner eliminated two players in a short period and managed to gain a substantial chip lead which was quite the opposite of what Wang expected. In other words, Wang’s chip lead with which he entered the final table was now long gone. The first one to be struck by Trayner’s mighty play was Shian Jian, who ended up fourth and earned AUD$38,734. The next one was Zhi Ma, who as the third-placed player and won AUD$50,950.

As soon as the heads-up play began, Trayner had a 2.5-1 chip lead, which put Wang in a very difficult situation.

In fact, Trayner had his momentum going for a bit before Wang managed to bluff it out in a hand and put a stop to it. He then doubled up his chips, and the heads-up play entered an hour-and-a-half long phase where the chip lead oscillated from one player to another. However, Wang decided to end things in one hand and he opened from the button only to meet Trayner’s open-shove. However, Wang covered him and Trayner had to think for a long time before decided to call. At that moment, Trayner had a king-seven against Wang’s pocket sevens. There was no help from the flop, turn, and river, and Wang eventually won with a pair.
