WSOPC The Star Sydney $5,000 Challenge

Matt Wakeman is a professional poker player who has had many successful tournaments but failed to win the big ones. That changed recently as he finally got a chance to take a WSOPC ring home after being better than 215 entrants in the $5,000 Challenge that took place at The Star Sydney. This victory also comes with the biggest cash prize that Wakeman has ever won – a total of $255,311. Wakeman’s career winnings are now almost a million.

Wakeman was pretty excited about the victory, and he gave a short interview after it, stating that he felt good and relieved in many ways. He added that he had been around for quite a while and that winning a tournament felt like “a monkey off his back.” In other words, many expected that he was going to win a tournament of this magnitude sooner, so that created a lot of pressure on him, hence his comment.

Wakeman played pretty well and tried not to be too ahead of himself, although he was the leader in chip number for the most of the tournament. He played a couple of really good hands and got some huge pots during the first day. This was a great boost for the rest of the tournament that he managed to retain all the way through. He added that he had run pretty well and that his play had been really smooth due to his great run.

Furthermore, Wakeman stated that he had tried not to get ahead of himself after the amazing first day. He said that he had approached one thing at a time and one hand at a time, focusing on just what was in front of him rather than playing fast and not thinking. He added that he hadn’t been thinking about winning during the most of the tournament as he had been in similar positions earlier and that hadn’t worked out well for him.

The tactic seemed to work out fine for Wakeman as he never risked or put himself in tough situations. He had two great hands which he used wisely and eventually won the tournament.

His heads-up opponent was another Australian player called Dejan Boskovic. Before him, Wakeman actually didn’t eliminate a single player in the final table, although he was in control of it for the most of the time. The heads-up battle lasted for a while, and Wakeman seemed to be getting better with every hand he played, making Boškovi?’s chip count go lower after every hand.

Wakeman also plans to participate in the Main Event and to continue playing all events until the series ends. Furthermore, this player has big plans for the future which all include poker in it. Having won his biggest lifetime cash, he now has great support to continue developing his poker skills and winning tournaments.
