There are plenty of great online poker players in the United States, and many of them took part in online WSOP events. However, one of the most accomplished players for 2020 was Yong Kwon, who goes by the online moniker “LuckySpewy1.” Friends also call him just “YK.” Kwon has managed to receive one of the biggest accolades in his poker career, being named 2020 WSOP.com Player of the Year.
YK is just 31 years old, and he currently plays online poker from New Jersey, where he also received his PoY title and the cash prize of $10,000.
Kwon said that he was well known among poker players to be a very active poker enthusiast, grinding online for hours. He added that “putting in volume” was an “essential part of success.”
Therefore, Kwon said that he was doing his best to play as many days as he can and put in a lot of serious work. The PoY winner recalled some regular players who lost it after Kwon played $10 – $30 satellites only one day after winning a gold bracelet in a WSOP online tournament.
YK managed to win a bracelet in 2019 WSOP Event #7: $4000 NLH Online, where he topped the field of 2,825 and won a total of $165,263.
He also won a wide range of other events, such as the one that was part of the WPT Online Borgata series, where he successfully snatched $6,933 after topping Event #2: $109 NLHE R+A $10,000 GTD. At the moment, YK has more than $3.8 million in earnings from online tournaments.
How YK Started Playing Poker
Kwon was born in South Korea but moved to the US when he was 10. Ever since then, he was a resident of the Garden State, where he also started playing poker, having watched a couple of episodes of the legendary High Stakes Poker TV show.
He stated that poker professionals had always seemed like cool people to him. Moreover, he added that his parents had discouraged him from pursuing a career in poker, as they had always known people who lost everything when wanting to become professional poker players. That was something that YK kept to himself.
After he started his college days, he was already 24-tabling in online poker, right from his dorm. These were mainly $10 – $25 SNGs.
But he didn’t leave college because of poker. Instead, he finished it in just three years and then decided to focus on poker all he could. This had been the plan all along. The good news soon arrived for YK and many other poker players as New Jersey legalized online poker.
YK is now married and has a 17-months-old son. However, he is also crushing it in poker nowadays, and he only plays PLO and NLHE/PLO MTTs. According to him, he has won approximately 1.6 million hands in PLO cash games and about a million in MTTs.
