The Big Ten is split into two divisions. The Big Ten East features the Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Penn State Nittany Lions, Indiana Hoosiers, Maryland Terrapins, Michigan State Spartans and Rutgers Scarlet Knights. In the Big Ten title game, the East will take on one of the following teams from the Big Ten West. The West includes the Wisconsin Badgers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Northwestern Wildcats, Illinois Fighting Illini and Purdue Boilermakers. Let’s start with the Big Ten East:
Ohio State Buckeyes –
J.T. Barrett and Mike Weber are going to be one of the best combinations in college football. The Buckeyes have a great secondary, and their linebackers are some of the best. Should be another great year in Columbus.
Michigan Wolverines –
The defensive line is going to be a change from a season ago, but should still be pretty solid. Wilton Speight is a veteran on this team, and no doubt will make them the best chance to down the Buckeyes.
Penn State Nittany Lions –
Penn State has Saquon Barkley and Trace McSorley back. That’s going to make their offense awfully tough to spot. Penn State will need someone to step up as top receiver.
Michigan State Spartans –
This team was 3-9 a season ago. They will be better this season, but will have a tough time getting back to an elite out of the Big Ten.
Indiana Hoosiers –
The Hoosiers have a great good linebackers crew, but in the end, this team does not have enough talent to win many games. They start the season against Big Ten rival Ohio State.
Maryland Terrapins –
D.J. Durkin is going to rely on a ton of young players to step up if they want any shot at competing in 2017.
Rutgers Scarlet Knights –
The linebackers for Rutgers will be the best group. The rest of the team appears to rank below average in Big Ten action.
Now for the Big Ten West:
Wisconsin Badgers –
J.T. Watt and Vince Biegel are gone from the Badgers, but many are projecting this defense to be just as good. The Badgers should be able to pound the football on the ground on offense, and run away with the division.
Iowa Hawkeyes –
Kirk Ferentz will have his Hawkeyes back in the mix. One thing is for sure about this team – they are going to have a great offensive line. If they can stop opponents, they will be tough to beat.
Northwestern Wildcats –
It’s not the most talented team in Evanston, but they have talent to win games. CLayton Thorson and Justin Jackson will give this team a chance. The defense for the Cats has plenty of talent, especially if their secondary is as good as many think.
Minnesota Golden Gophers –
Do not expect P.J. Fleck to create miracles in his first season with Minnesota. But, in saying that, this team is going to look defense. The Golden Gophers will run the football, that’s for sure.
Nebraska Cornhuskers –
The Huskers have a great deal of average in them. They will be able to contend in most Big Ten games, but finding a way to win could be tough.
Illinois Fighting Illini –
Lovie Smith will need to start winning soon, or the love fest is going to come to an end in Champaign.
Purdue Boilermakers –
Purdue has all sorts of issues on the defensive end. The Boilermakers have a pretty nice quarterback in David Blough, but if they can’t stop opponents it won’t matter.
The Big Ten Conference is going to loaded once again in 2017. Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and Wisconsin are all national title contenders. There are a handful of other teams that have a chance to dethrone those four. It should be a great college football season, and the Big Ten is going to be the leader of the pack once again. Enjoy the Big Ten Conference 2017 Football season!
