Fresh off a four-game sweep of the first-place Astros, the Mariners are officially back in contention. Two-thirds of their wins have been saved by closer Edwin Diaz, as they always seem to close out the tight ones. There’s hope.
The A’s, on the other hand, have been baseball’s second-best team the last few months, and have the league’s fourth-best record. They’ve got some work to do in this series if they want to move a step closer towards sealing a playoff spot. Seattle is favorite in this game, despite being on the road.

Seattle Mariners
Led by the power of Nelson Cruz (30 home runs), this team has been showing the power this year. But they have been struggling of late, and despite being so far over .500, they have actually been outscored by 29 runs. Jean Segura has continued to hit the ball well, while Ryon Healy, Mitch Haniger, and Kyle Seager have all gone deep frequently. The loss of Robinson Cano early in the season hasn’t taken the toll on this team many people expected, and they are still on contention. They’ve got a chance, but they need some wins, especially in this series. The A’s have overtaken them.
They will send James Paxton to the mound for his 24th start of the season, which will tie a career-high. His 175 strikeouts are already the most he’s had in a season, while he’s gone 10-5, posting a 3.63 ERA. Paxton has been a key to the Mariners resurgence. He allowed four runs on seven hits over five and two thirds innings in his last start against the Astros.
Oakland Athletics
Though they lack “very” good starting pitchers, they have one of the best closers in the game, Blake Treinen, who has 31 saves and an astounding ERA of 0.90. Khris Davis has been an absolute monster this year, leading the club with 34 HRs and 903 RBI’s. They’ve got four other players with at least fifteen home runs, showing off the power. Jed Lowrie has been having a career year, while the team has continued to rattle off the wins. The A’s right now are a force to be reckoned with.
The A’s will send Mike Fiers to the mound for his second start since being added from the Tigers. He picked up a win in that start, allowing one run on four hits over five and third innings of work against the Dodgers. He had been pitching decently in Detroit, as he now looks to keep it going.
Mariners pick up a win, pull within a game of Oakland
A good day for the Mariners, as they win the first of a three-game set with the A’s. Two games behind them right now for the 2nd wild-card spot, they will cut that in half.
Kyle Seager will pick up a few hits early in the game, to help rally the team to get going. It won’t be a great day for Mike Fiers.
