The Atlanta Braves are out west in San Diego to begin the second half of the regular season, and they have started it off the right way. Atlanta has won the first two games against the Padres and will be looking for the three-game sweep on Sunday afternoon. San Diego had a nice first half of the season as well but needs to find a way to salvage the series finale.
Atlanta has now won three straight games to improve its record to 56-37 on the season. The Braves have a commanding lead in the National League East and will likely make the playoffs again this season. San Diego isn’t going to win the NL West, but they have a shot at the Wild Card. The Padres come into this game with a record of 45-47 and need to start winning games to keep up with the pace. The Atlanta Braves are -140 over the San Diego Padres in the series finale.
Soroka Makes Start For Braves
The Braves should have a huge edge in the pitching matchup in this game as young Mike Soroka will make the start. Soroka is in just his second year in the Major Leagues but was named to the National League All-Star team this season. The right-hander has gone 9-1 with a 2.42 earned run average in his 15 starts this season and looks like a future star in the National League. Starting pitching has been a bright spot for the Braves all season long.
Atlanta has a ton of young talent in its everyday lineup, but they also have an All-Star veteran leading the way. Freddie Freeman leads the team with a .302 batting average to go along with 23 home runs and 68 runs batted in. Ronald Acuna Jr. is also having a monster season in Atlanta and has hit 23 bombs and driven in 55 runs. This Braves team can score with the best of them.
Youth Movement Taking Place in SD
The San Diego Padres might be a year or two away from being a playoff team, but there is plenty of young talent on the roster. Franmil Reyes is one of those young players and has hit 25 home runs and driven in 42 runs. Manny Machado was brought in to lead this team and has performed well in his first season in San Diego. Machado has 23 home runs to go along with 61 RBI.
Right-hander Cal Quantrill is scheduled to make the start for the Padres on Sunday. Quantrill is another part of the youth movement for the Padres and has shown promise this season. The 24-year-old is 2-2 with a 4.83 earned run average this season but will be dealing with a tough lineup in this game.
Braves Complete Series Sweep
The Atlanta Braves didn’t lose any momentum at the All-Star break and have come out of the gate red hot. The Padres are building something special in San Diego, but they aren’t quite there yet. Bet the Atlanta Braves -140 over the San Diego Padres in the series finale.
