Division leaders are set to clash as the Philadelphia Phillies host the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night. The Red Sox and Phillies will meet for a brief two-game interleague series at Citizens Bank Park. Both teams are playoff contenders in 2018, and this should be a highly competitive series.
The Red Sox come in riding a four-game winning streak, after sweeping a road series against the Baltimore Orioles. The Red Sox are 85-35, and have a very comfortable lead in the American League East Division. The Phillies were tied with the Atlanta Braves atop the National League East after losing on Sunday. The Boston Red Sox are -146 over the Phillies in the series opener.
Phillies Need More Offense
The Philadelphia Phillies need to find more consistent offense if they are going to reach the 2018 playoffs. The Phillies were shut out in back to back games last week against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Maikel Franco leads the team up with a .279 batting average, but the team hits just .235 as a team. Philadelphia will face a tough challenge against the Red Sox in this game.
Young right-hander Nick Pivetta will start the series opener for the Phillies on Tuesday night. Pivetta was solid in the last start, pitching six shutout innings to earn the victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Overall Pivetta is 7-9 with a 4.51 earned run average, but the Phillies need better starts as the playoff battle heats up.
Johnson Makes Start For Boston
The Boston Red Sox are sending left-hander Brian Johnson to the mound to oppose Pivetta. Johnson has made 30 appearances for the Red Sox, but this will be just his ninth start of the 2018 season. Johnson is 3-3 with a 3.95 earned run average on the season, and will look to give the Red Sox a quality start in this game.
J.D. Martinez and Mookie Betts continue to put up terrific numbers for the Boston Red Sox. The duo are front-runners for the 2018 American League Most Valuable Player Award which will be given out at the end of the season. Betts leads the American League with a .350 batting average while Martinez leads the league in home runs with 37. Boston will look to stay hot on offense on Tuesday night.
Red Sox Slug Their Way To Victory
The Phillies are trying to hold off the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals in the NL East. Philadelphia must find more offense if they are going to reach the playoffs. They caught a break by not facing one of Boston’s top starters this week, and they need to take advantage.
The Red Sox continue to win games at a historic rate and don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Boston should be able to take advantage of hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday night. Look for the Red Sox to win their fifth straight game on Tuesday. Bet the Boston Red Sox -146 to win the series opener over the Phillies.
