Following a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, the New York Yankees will look to complete a four-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox on Sunday night. The Yankees are -125 favorites to win the series finale.
New York dropped three of four games in Boston last weekend, but they’ve quickly put that behind them. They’ve now won four in a row, maintaining an eight-game lead atop the AL East. Of course, with the Rays winning five in a row, there’s a little pressure on the Yankees to keep winning as well.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox have now lost seven in a row. Boston won the first three games of their series with the Yankees last weekend. However, they lost the series finale and then proceeded to get swept by the Rays in a three-game set. With seven straight defeats, the Red Sox are now 13.5 games behind the Yankees and 5.5 games out of a Wild Card spot.
Price Check
The Red Sox will look to David Price to help snap out of their losing streak. In 20 starts this year, Price is 7-4 with a 3.86 ERA. However, he’s gone four straight starts without a win. He also posted a 5.04 ERA over his six starts in July, so he’s hoping that he can bounce back in August, especially after failing to get out of the fifth inning in two of his last three starts.
To make matters worse, Price hasn’t always fared well against the Yankees. There are a number of Yankees who have had Price’s number over the years. The caveat, of course, is that the Yankees are missing several key players due to injury. However, the likes of DJ LaMahieu, Gio Urshela, and backup outfielder Cameron Maybin are all swinging hot bats at the moment to help make up for any missing players.
Feeling Happy
The Yankees will turn to JA Happ to try to complete the sweep. It’s been a rough year for the lefty, who is 8-6 with a 5.19 ERA over 21 starts. Things haven’t been much better for him lately, as he posted a 5.04 ERA in July. Happ was also bounced in the fourth inning from a recent start and has allowed four home runs in his last three outings.
On the bright side, Happ has a good history pitching against Boston. He beat the Red Sox when he faced them in May, allowing just one run over five innings. Boston’s roster has a combined batting average of .214 against Happ. However, despite their losing streak, the Red Sox have continued to produce offensively. JD Martinez, Andrew Benintendi, and Xander Bogaerts are among the Red Sox hitters who are hot right now, so they have a chance to do some damage against Happ.
Bad to Worse
The Red Sox have to be devoid of any confidence after losing both games of a doubleheader on Saturday. Considering Happ’s career success against Boston hitters, it’ll be difficult for the Red Sox to bust out of their slump. Bet on the Yankees to complete the sweep with a win on Sunday night.
