It’s going down in Texas on Saturday as a pair of ranked teams from the American Conference will match up. The unstoppable defense of Cincinnati goes up against the high-powered offense of the Mustangs. Something will have to give!
The Bearcats have been allowing just 12 points per game this year, good for sixth in the country. Luke Fickell’s team is out to just the kind of start they wanted.
All the prep they did for this year was done with this game in mind. The best thing they can do is win today to claim bragging rights and the tiebreaker over SMU.
Sonny Dykes’ Mustang offense has been out-of-this-world good this year. They have averaged close to 43 points per game, good for seventh in the country. This comes after a year where they averaged over 40. Things haven’t been slowing down for them, but speeding up. And, for the better.
These teams did not meet last year, as they are in opposite parts of the conference (east and west). So, this will be worth the wait.
ODDS:
SMU is a 2.5-point favorite, with the over/under set at 55.5.
Bearcats Looking to Stay Perfect
Cincinnati has played three games this year, emerging victorious in each of them. Their opponents have managed to put just 37 points on the board while recording seven defensive interceptions already. On that side of the ball, it seems that Luke Fickell’s Bearcats are just unstoppable.
It will need to continue to stay that way against a high-powered SMU offense, while their own quarterback will need to step up. Desmond Ridder has thrown for 597 yards and six touchdowns to go along with four interceptions. He hasn’t impressed, but he will need to be much better in this game.
Gerrid Dooks is the team’s leading rusher with 145 yards on 42 carries, fewer than four per. He does have four rushing touchdowns, so if they can get to the red zone, they’re good.
SMU Looking to Get to 6-0
The Mustangs have played two more games than their opponents and have come away as the winner every week. Shane Buechele has been on an absolute tear, throwing for 1,700+ yards and 12 touchdowns with just two interceptions on the year. And Ulysses Bentley IV has 506 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Lethal.
Reggie Roberson Jr. is averaging nearly 100 receiving yards per game, totaling 474 yards on 22 catches, with five touchdowns. He’s been hard for cornerbacks to try and contain, slipping away from coverage and grabbing every ball in sight.
Look for Brandon Crossley in the secondary today as a key playmaker on D. He has three interceptions, plus a tackle for loss on the year. He’s been making big plays.
Mustangs Keep it Rolling
Offense will triumph over defense in this Saturday night showdown. SMU will improve to 6-0, dropping Cincy to 3-1.
