In a game that many are overlooking on Saturday, the Clemson Tigers will take on the Auburn Tigers. This game will take place on the campus of Auburn, at Jordan Hare Stadium. It’s pretty rare that one of the top teams in all of college football will start their season with a true road game against a power conference team. According to BetOnline, the Clemson Tigers are -8 in this game.
The Clemson Tigers come into the season as the second ranked team in all of college football. That’s probably correct after they lost in the national title game to Alabama a season ago. The Tigers won their first 14 games of the season, including wins over North Carolina in the ACC title game, and Oklahoma in the Semi Final. The Tigers then fell to Alabama 45-40 in the title game.
For Auburn, they of course have to compete in the rugged SEC. Auburn did not have a great season a year ago, winning just six regular season games. The Tigers were invited to the Birmingham Bowl, and came away with a 31-10 win over Memphis.
Clemson Looking to Take One More Step
DeShaun Watson is back for the Clemson Tigers. The quarterback is a front runner for the Heisman, after throwing for over 4,000 yards and rushing for an additional 1,000 yards. On the season, Watson combined for 47 touchdowns. The Tigers also return Artavis Scott, who is a great athletic receiver, who will get the ball in times of need for the Tigers.
If that wasn’t enough, Wayne Gallman is also back for the Clemson offense. With the skill players the Tigers have returning Dabo Swinney may have the best offense in all of college football. Clemson will continue to employ the spread offense in 2016 as well. The Clemson Tigers will come home to host Troy and South Carolina State in their next two games.
Auburn Seeking Upset
The Auburn Tigers know they have to be much improved in 2016, not only for this game, but their entire SEC slate. The Tigers see Sean White return as the starting quarterback. White tossed for over 1,100 yards a season ago, but just 1 touchdown and 4 interceptions. The running game is the Tigers bread and butter. Last season, Auburn saw 13 players run the football. Do not be surprised if that number is surpassed this season.
The power spread offense will be the offense of choice for Gus Malzahn and his Tigers. RUnning backs from a season ago Peyton Barber and Javon Robinson are gone. Despite all the different carries, those two combined for more than 1,900 yards and 16 touchdowns. Auburn plays their first five games at home. Their first true road game is October 8th at Mississippi State. The Tigers have LSU coming to town September 24th.
Tigers over Tigers
Well, that’s confusing. But, that’s exactly what will happen in this game. The defending runner up will not have an easy go of this game. Clemson knows Auburn is going to want to run the football, and they will still be able to do it. This game has the expectation of being a pretty high scoring game. Despite it being on the road, the Clemson Tigers are going to win this game.
The point spread is pretty juicy. You can grab the Auburn Tigers at just over a touchdown in this game. Look for the Auburn Tigers to rush the football enough to come away with a cover here. In the end, Clemson wins, but the bet is to take the Auburn Tigers +8 at BetOnline over the Clemson Tigers.
