Both Teams Coming in Strong
The Red Raiders are coming off a 25 point victory over Texas Rio Grande in their last game. Jarrett Culver led the way in the scoring column with 19 points on 8 of 13 shooting. DeShawn Corprew was the next highest scorer chipping in 13 points. Corprew was also the team’s leading rebounder and earned a double-double with 10 rebounds to go along with his 13 points. Tariq Owens was the only other Red Raider in double figures with 10 points. Matt Mooney also had a solid all-around game, going for 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists. The defense was solid as well holding their opponent to just 46 points.
West Virginia is coming off a 10 point victory over the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in their last game. James Bolden was the leading scorer for West Virginia, putting up 22 points on 7 of 14 shooting off the bench. Bolden also had a solid game in the other 2 major categories, tallying 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Esa Ahmad was the next highest scorer and was just 1 rebound shy of a double-double with 21 points and 9 rebounds. The Mountaineers also got double figures from two other players. Wesley Harris chopped in 10 points and Derek Culver added a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in just 19 minutes of play.
Jarrett Culver is Dominating
Jarrett Culver has been the do it all man for Texas Tech this season. He is the leading scorer with 19.6 points per game, the leading rebounder with 5.6 a game, and the leading assister with 4.3 a game. The Red Raiders have been solid on both offense and defense so far this season. They are putting up 75.3 points per game and are shooting nearly 50% from the field. They are holding their opponents to just 52.3 points per game. The Red Raiders are 3-1 in neutral floor games this season. They will face a tough test going into West Virginia as this is their first true road game of the season.
The West Virginia leader is Esa Ahmad as he leads the team in points with 14.3 per game and rebounds with 5.8 per game. James Bolden is the leading assist man with 3.4 per game and is turning the ball over 2.4 times each game. The reason for the struggles so far for the Mountaineers is the defense. They are uncharacteristically having a terrible season defensively as they are allowing opponents to score 73.3 points a game. The offense is doing what it can, but it is difficult to win a lot of games giving up that many points. On offense, the Mountaineers are scoring 79.3 points per game and are shooting 42.6% from the field. They are 6-1 at home this season and will look to keep the good fortune at home going in this one.
Texas Tech vs. West Virginia Prediction
Texas Tech comes in at -3.5. The Red Rainers have been the more sound team on both sides of the ball this season. The offense will have no problem scoring points against this West Virginia team that is not playing well on the defensive side of the ball. I think the Red Raiders defense will step up and shit down the Mountaineers like they have so many other teams this season. Take Texas Tech -3.5.
