The first-place team in the NL West faces the last-place team in the NL West on Tuesday, as the Los Angeles Dodgers host the Colorado Rockies.
The Dodgers took the series opener 5-3 on Monday and are favored with a -245 moneyline on Tuesday compared to Colorado’s +195 moneyline. The game also has an over/under of 8.5 runs.
It might be worth noting that the Rox beat the Dodgers in two of three games in Denver last week. However, the Dodgers won the series finale, starting a stretch of five wins in six games that includes Monday’s victory. That stretch has allowed Los Angeles to build its lead atop the NL West to 4.5 games.
As for the Rockies, Monday’s loss dropped them ten games under .500 on the season. Even with those two wins over Los Angeles last week, Colorado is just 5-8 in the team’s last 13 games.
However, the season isn’t over just yet because the Rockies are only eight games out of a Wild Card spot, giving them a little time to turn things around.
Rocky Mountain High
Speaking of turning things around, that’s what the Rockies hope German Marquez can do starting on Tuesday. In his first 15 starts of the season, Marquez is 4-6 with a 5.89 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP.
He’s far from the ace he was a few years ago, although Marquez has a 4.21 ERA on the road this season, so he’s been at his best when he’s not been at Coors Field.
The bad news for the Rockies is they haven’t been able to get their offense rolling lately when they haven’t been at Coors Field. The Rockies have scored just 13 total runs in their last six road games.
On the plus side, C.J. Cron is crushing it with three homers and 11 RBIs in his last six games, while Charlie Blackmon, Kris Bryant, and Brendan Rodgers are all heating up for the Rox.
The Replacement
With Walker Buehler on the IL, Mitch White will continue to take his spot in the LA rotation on Tuesday. In six starts and five relief appearances, the righty is 1-1 with a 3.93 ERA.
White has actually been more effective as a starter than a reliever, although the Dodgers were just 1-3 in games he started during the month of June.
Fortunately for White, he has the Los Angeles lineup backing him up. The Dodgers are averaging five runs per game during their recent 5-1 stretch, which is right around their average for the season.
Justin Turner has led the way during that time, batting .526 with a 1.565 OPS over those six games, while Mookie Betts has returned from the IL red-hot, giving the LA lineup even more punch.
A Little Bit of Risk
While the Dodgers always seem like a safe bet on paper, this is the kind of game where Colorado’s lucrative moneyline could be worth the risk. As mentioned, the Dodgers are 1-3 in White’s last four starts, whereas the Rockies have been better when Marquez starts lately, especially on the road.
Take a chance and bet on the Rockies to pull off the upset on Tuesday.
