The Detroit Lions have not been great this year, blowing a late 18-point lead to end in a tie with the Cardinals to open the season. But their defense has been very tough, and Kerryon Johnson has been running the ball impressively to kick the year off. They have moved the ball well and have a serious chance at leading the NFC North with a win over the Green Bay Packers on Monday night. If not, it may be tough to catch up later, considering how good Green Bay has been.
What a revelation the first five games of 2019 have been for the Packers. Aaron Rodgers is back to slinging the ball all over the field, Aaron Jones is looking like a star in the making in the backfield, and Matt LaFleur is doing his job to the best of his ability. The money they spent to revamp their defense has clearly been paying off, and they look not only like a playoff team, but a possible Super Bowl contender.
The spread for the primetime matchup favors the Packers by 3.5 points, while the over/under is set at 45.5.
Detroit Looking For First Place
Through the Lions’ first four games, they have not seen a game that didn’t come to the wire. They tied with the Cardinals, defeated both the Chargers and Eagles by three points, and came close but lost by four to the Chiefs prior to their bye week. This being their only game in primetime, the Lions hope to make some serious noise against their division rivals. Kenny Golladay has taken the reins as the top receiver and has been looking terrific, while Marvin Jones Jr. has continued to thrive. Matthew Stafford has nine TDs to just two picks, throwing for 1,122 yards in four games.
They have nine sacks as a team, a number that we should soon expect to rise by a significant margin, as they are always tremendous in the realm of pass rush, something coached well by Matt Patricia.
Pack Continues To Roll
At 4-1, this team has been tough, their one loss coming to the Eagles on a red-zone turnover in the waning moments following a long injury break after Avante Maddox went down. When the pace of the game isn’t significantly altered at the end, they have won all four of their games. They have wins over the Cowboys, Bears, Vikings and Broncos thus far, an 11-point victory over Denver being their largest of the year. Rodgers only has six TDs but has 1,307 yards on the year with just a single pick. Jones has eight rushing touchdowns.
They already have 15 sacks on the year, led by Preston Smith’s 5.5 and ZaDarius Smith’s five. Both of them have been beasting here in Green Bay.
