After a historic UFC 290 event last week, there is another event in Las Vegas at the UFC APEX. Headlining this Fight Night will be former champion Holly Holm taking on Mayra Bueno Silva in a women’s bantamweight bout.
With the bantamweight title recently becoming vacant after the great Amanda Nunes retired following her win at UFC 289, this fight becomes even bigger than it was supposed to be. Holm is ranked as the #3 contender, and Silva is #10. With a win for either of them, they will most likely be fighting for a title in their next appearance.
The betting odds have Holm as the -180 betting favorite over the +155 Silva.
Holly Holm–Is Her Time Up?
Holm became a mainstay in the UFC with her incredible upset KO victory over Rhonda Rousey back in 2015. She has been one of the biggest stars in the sport, but now she is 41 years old and fighting a 31-year-old in her prime.
“The Preacher’s Daughter” looks to be still in great condition and trains at a great gym in Jackson-Wink MMA in New Mexico. With Jon Jones in the gym with you, it’s tough not to consistently improve and be inspired.
The question mark for Holm is her age. Her recent performances have been nowhere near world class, and she seems to maybe have lost a step. She has always been slightly on the “boring” side with a lot of casual fight fans because she fights her way intelligently to a decision.
Will she be able to beat someone as talented and hungry as Mayra Bueno Silva?
Mayra Bueno Silva–UFC Champion Dark Horse
Ranked all the way at #10 in the division, it’s tough to imagine that Silva expected this fight to have quite the title implications as it does now after Nunes retired. With a win over Holm, Silva finds herself in the driver’s seat in the title picture.
Silva fights with a much more entertaining style than Holm and seems to still be improving. She has looked great in recent fights where she has brought her striking and grappling together and looks like a complete fighter.
A big win and a finish over Holly Holm this weekend will give her a title shot and a lot of new fans going into the second half of 2023. Silva has two finishes in a row and will be looking to make it three.
Holm vs. Silva Pick and Prediction
After breaking down this matchup and watching the film, it’s tough to see how Holm could get the job done. Silva is just so much more dynamic of a striker and grappler than Holm and is very dangerous with her submission skills.
The prediction for this one is that Silva knocks down Holm with a right hand and then finishes her with a submission. It’s easy to see a leg lock of some sort in a scramble with Holm on the ground. Silva is great at spinning off and grabbing a hold of a limb to get a finish.
