How to Wager on Baseball Games in Las Vegas

Baseball season is finally here.  It is an American pastime that is even more exciting when visiting Las Vegas.

There are several ways to bet on a baseball game.  The most frugal wager is on the outcome of the game.  This is called a moneyline bet.  This type of wager is available in all sports.  It is more prominent in baseball due to the lack of point spreads.

Baseball Moneylines

One advantage of baseball betting is that the house advantage is typically lower than other sports.  A moneyline on baseball is what is called a dime-line.  This means that there is only a $10 spread between the numbers.  For example, a baseball game that is even would be -105 on both sides.  A football game would require -110 for a wager on an even team.  This means a player is only laying $105 to win $100 on baseball, where football would require $110 to win $100.  This adds up quickly through a 162-game season.

Baseball Totals

Baseball totals, or over/unders, are different than most other sports.  This is because the difference between a half a run is huge.  American League games will have a higher run total than National League games due to the designated hitter rules.  Here are a few examples of baseball totals:

• 8o -120
• 9.5u -125
• 10u -110

In the above examples, the number refers to the amount of money that must be laid to win $100 if that side is wagered.  The first example would mean a player would bet $120 to win $100 if the over bet is taken.  The second example means a player would wager $125 to win $100 if he wanted to bet the game would go under 9.5 runs.  The opposite side is $20 less.  A player that wanted the under 8 runs in the first example would bet $100 to win $100.  A player that wanted over 9.5 runs in the second example would bet $100 to win $105.

Run Lines

The only point spread that is ever published on baseball games is a run line.  This requires the favorite to win by two runs to cover.  The team that is laying the 1.5 runs is almost always a money underdog.  The team that receives 1.5 runs will often have to lay -200 or more.

• Atlanta -1.5 +170/Florida +1.5 -210
• Milwaukee -1.5 +160/Houston +1.5 -200

Baseball Futures

Bettors may wager on how far a team will progress in the postseason at most sports books.  A player may bet a team wins the division or league, or win the World Series.  Win totals are available before the season starts.  These wagers often have a large juice and the sports book holds the cash until the end of the season.
