InterLeague Baseball: Chicago White Sox vs. St. Louis Cardinals

The Chicago White Sox are hosting the St. Louis Cardinals for a brief two game series this week at Guaranteed Rate Field. The St. Louis Cardinals had little problems with the Chicago White Sox, defeating them 14-2 in the series opener. This is the first matchup between these two teams this season.

The White Sox and Cardinals are in two very different spots as a Major League Baseball franchise. The White Sox find themselves in fourth place in the American League Central, but are more than 20 games out of first place. The Cardinals are in third place in the National League Central, but have some work to do to get back in the playoff race. The St. Louis Cardinals are -135 over the White Sox on Wednesday night.

White Sox In Total Rebuild

The Chicago White Sox are in the middle of a total rebuild, and they are not competitive in 2018. The White Sox have some pieces that appear to factor in the future, but are currently more than 30 games under the .500 mark. The White Sox rank near the bottom of the league in both total runs scored, and team ERA, and lack a true star. The White Sox will be true “sellers” at the trade deadline.

Veteran lefthander, Carlos Rodon, will make the start for the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night. Rodon started the season on the disabled list, and is just now starting to pitch with some consistency for the White Sox. The veteran is 1-3 with a 4.29 earned run average through 6 starts so far in 2018. Rodon could draw some interest from playoff contenders before the trade deadline at the end of July.

Cardinals Need To Find Pitching

The St. Louis Cardinals have struggled to keep starting pitchers healthy all season long. Young, Luke Weaver, will make the start for the Cardinals on Wednesday night. Weaver has bounced around between St. Louis and Memphis this season, and has had an up and down start to his big league career. Weaver is just 5-7 with a 4.92 earned run average so far this season for the Cardinals.

Veteran, Matt Carpenter, has led the Cardinals offense in 2018, and still has a chance to be an All-Star this season. Carpenter has belted a team high 17 home runs this season to go along with a .365 on base percentage. The Cardinals have had several veterans struggle this season, but Matt Carpenter has not been one of them.

St. Louis Controls Chicago

The Chicago White Sox are in rebuilding mode, but they thought they would be able to compete in 2018. Carlos Rodon will try to deliver a win on Wednesday, while also adding to his trade value. The White Sox have a solid minor league system, but are still a few years away from competing at the Major League level.

The Cardinals still trail both the Brewers and Cubs in the National League Central race, and will need a big second half to catch them. St. Louis is trying to find young starting pitching to help lead them back to the playoffs. Look for Luke Weaver and the Cardinals offense to find a way to get a win on Wednesday. Bet the St. Louis Cardinals to complete the two-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. Bet the Cardinals -140 over the White Sox.
