Two nationally ranked powerhouses in Iowa will get together on Saturday in a high-stakes game. #9 Iowa and #10 Iowa State battle every year, and this one is going to be a lot of fun. For both clubs, a chance at a 2-0 start and an opportunity to climb the rankings awaits them if they can best the opposition.
Iowa went against Indiana in their first game, which wasn’t too fun to behold. It was a 34-6 win, with Riley Moss scoring two defensive touchdowns. The offense is still going to have to show more, but a pair of rushing TD’s in the first game of the year is still nice. And beating up a team clearly ranked well below you is a step in the right direction.
The Cyclones have a great D but won by just six points against non-major Northern Iowa. The final score was 16-10 and was a huge disappointment. You can win a game and still be looking at it as a mental defeat. So many things were not up to snuff, and they need to be far better if they want to win this game. A much toucher foe awaits.
Odds and Betting Lines
Saturday’s spread is set at IOWA STATE -4.5. The over/under is 46.5 points. The Iowa moneyline is +160, and the Iowa State line is set at -190.
Hawkeyes Seek 2-0 Start
A 34-6 win over Indiana was a great way to start the year. But the real work begins early in week 2 against a tough Cyclones team. And it all starts with Spencer Petras, who had trouble completing passes a week ago. He finished 13-27 with 145 yards.
He put up just 5.4 yards per attempt and needs to find ways to get the ball downfield. Also, putting up a less than 50% completion rate is horrid. If he’s not better, it will be an automatic defeat. They did get 99 yards and a rushing TD from Tyler Goodson, who is seeking another big performance.
After scoring just one TD during his first three years, Riley Moss had two of them in the last game, so look for him to continue to make an impact.
Cyclones Go For 2-0
The Northern Iowa game was one to forget. The good thing is that Iowa State got out of it with a victory still. So, at 1-0, they have a quick chance to fix things. Brock Purdy wasn’t dominant, but he did the job that needed to be done last week.
He went 21-26 for 199 yards, with no touchdowns or picks. He also added 58 yards on nine attempts on the ground. Breece Hall ran for 69 yards on 23 carries, good for a putrid 3.0 ypc. He will also need to attack the holes.
But on D, they made life tough. As a unit, the Cyclones had five tackles for loss and a pair of interceptions. Look for them to pressure Petras from snap one.
Iowa State Loses Squeaker
Iowa will come up with a win in a game that stays close until the end. Game ball to Tyler Goodson.
