After seeing their seven-game winning streak end on Tuesday, the Los Angeles Dodgers will try to bounce back quickly when they play the St. Louis Cardinals again on Wednesday. The Dodgers remain road favorites on Wednesday with a moneyline of -150 while the Cardinals have a moneyline of +130. The over/under for the game is set at eight runs.
Despite the loss on Tuesday, the Dodgers are still 9-2 in July and have won 11 of their last 13 games overall. Los Angeles is currently 26 games over .500 and has the best record in the National League. More importantly, the Dodgers have built a 7.5-game lead atop the NL West.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals have now won three in a row after taking the series opener on Tuesday. That winning streak followed a stretch in which St. Louis lost eight of nine games, so the Cards have needed a boost. With their winning streak, the Cardinals are two games behind the Brewers for first place in the NL Central and would be in possession of a Wild Card spot if the season ended today.
Living Wright
St. Louis will have Adam Wainwright on the mound on Wednesday to help the winning streak going. The 40-year-old has gone 6-7 with a 3.15 ERA over his 17 starts this season. Wainwright has pitched far better than his record would indicate, although the Cardinals have lost the last two games he’s started and three of his last five starts.
Fortunately, the St. Louis lineup has come alive, scoring 17 runs over the last three games after scoring just seven runs in the previous seven games. Paul Goldschmidt remains a constant threat for the Cardinals and one of the front-runners for MVP. However, the support around him has dwindled over the last week until the last two games, although Albert Pujols finds himself in a groove at the moment with seven hits in his last 15 at-bats.
Tony the Tiger
It’ll be Tony Gonsolin on the mound for the Dodgers on Wednesday. He’s been enjoying the best season of his career, going 11-0 with a 1.62 ERA and a 0.80 WHIP over his first 16 starts of 2022. Gonsolin seems to be getting better as the season goes along, going seven innings in each of his last two starts while also helping the Dodgers win 11 of his last 12 starts.
Of course, the Dodgers are always a threat to score runs, scoring at least four runs in nine of their 11 games in July. If nothing else, Freddie Freeman and Trea Turner have proven that they can carry this lineup. But there is help elsewhere, as the Dodgers have nine homers in their last six games with both Freeman and Gavin Lux red-hot at the moment.
Blues in St. Louis
The Cardinals are surely a worthy opponent for the Dodgers, although their offense has only had two good games this month, which could make them vulnerable against Gonsolin. He gives Los Angeles a huge leg up in this matchup, especially with the Dodgers being so consistent offensively lately. Despite Tuesday’s loss, the Dodgers are a good bet to get back on track and win on Wednesday.
