Sports betting is a main topic of discussion in several states across the US as the highest court in the land is set to rule on the Christie vs. NCAA case. The outcome of the case, which is expected to be decided this year, could allow every state to offer sports betting options. It seems most states are expecting a positive outcome in New Jersey’s favor as many are already pushing legislation to be ready to offer sports wagering if the possibility emerges. The latest state to introduce a sports betting bill is Louisiana.
This week, H 245, emerged in Louisiana, set to legalize sports betting in the state. According to Legal Sports Report, the bill would expand gaming options at the live horse racing facilities that are eligible to include sports betting. This would be done by amending the existing gaming law of the state. There are currently four racinos in Louisiana that would be eligible; the Fair Grounds, Delta Downs, Louisiana Downs and Evangeline Downs.
The bill would place the Louisiana Gaming Control Board in charge of regulating the new industry with betting allowing any type of sport event including football, hockey, basketball, boxing, baseball, jai alai, etc. The legislation also calls for a referendum to be created to authorize gambling in a parish of the state where sports betting might be offered.
It is possible that this legislation will move forward and be passed into law. The state already offers several gaming options including tribal gaming and riverboat casinos. However, nothing is set in stone. For now, we will have to wait and see how well received the bill is and if legislators are willing to move the bill forward.
Louisiana now joins around 20+ states that are considering sports betting in the US. All efforts will be for naught if SCOTUS decides to rule in favor of the NCAA. Hopefully, the outcome will be for NJ and we shall see sports betting available across the board in the US.
