The Memphis Tigers will travel to Houston, Texas, on Sunday afternoon and take on a top-three-ranked Houston Cougars team. The Cougars are arguably the top team in America but do have some losses throughout the year that do show that they are beatable.
They sit at 24-2 overall and 12-1 in the American Athletic Conference. Memphis, on the other hand, could truly boost their NCAA tournament stock with a huge win in this game as they sit at 20-6 and 10-3 in the conference.
The books are anticipating a Houston win in this one, and rightfully so. They come in at -13.5 on the spread line.
Is this an Easy Win for Houston?
What’s worked for Houston this year is certainly their defense, and that’s not ever going to change. They’ve been playing elite defense for the past few seasons, and it would make sense if that continues on Sunday. However, they’ve also been scoring at an elite level recently, putting up at least 70 points in seven of their last eight games.
If they can find a way to replicate that type of offensive success throughout the remainder of the season, this team nearly going to be unbeatable when it matters most. There’s a reason why Houston continues to be one of the top teams in America this season, and many are starting to believe that even their offense is catching up to what that defense can do.
This won’t be an easy game, as Memphis is the best team outside of them in their conference, but they have more than enough to get the job done. They will play them once again after this, which is something to certainly think about.
How’s Memphis Going to React?
Memphis comes into this one surprisingly with that spread line, but there are a few different ways that we can look at this. They haven’t necessarily played too well on the road at 5-4, and Houston is 13-2 on their home court.
Furthermore, Memphis has won their last three games, and that’s something they could build off of. Not only have they won those last three games, but they’ve beaten some impressive teams as they have wins over South Florida, Temple, and UCF. That same Temple team that they beat by nine just a week ago, Houston lost to at home during the earlier part of the season.
If Memphis wants any chance of winning this game, they need to continue scoring the basketball at an elite level. They’ve put up 99 points in two of their last six games, and if they can find a way to do something like that, they should find themselves in a good position.
Memphis Tigers vs. Houston Cougars Prediction
Although Houston is clearly one of the top three teams in America this season and even have a good argument to be made that they are the best, it might not be a bad idea to play Memphis +13.5. That’s an insane line for a team that has proven that they can play with some of the top teams in the conference.
Furthermore, 13.5 points in a college basketball game is already somewhat high.
