With online gambling legislation a hot topic of discussion across the United States, sports betting has also been added to the mix. Many states have tried to get in on the sports betting action that is offered essentially only by the state of Nevada. The US has strict regulations on sports betting and many states want to get in on the action. In the past, every professional sports league has been opposed to sports betting in one form or another. However, over the past few months we have seen the NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver come forward in support of sports betting and now it seems the MLB Commissioner is weighing in on the topic.
On ESPN’s Outside the Lines, David Purdum spoke with the MLB Commissioner, Rob Manfred, and found out just how the head of Major League Baseball feels about the subject. Manfred was not as enthusiastic as Silver on the subject but did state that he wants to connect with fellow commissioners on the subject to see where each stands on the subject, so the leagues can have a united front.
In the report, Manfred stated that gambling in today’s society has changes its presence on legalized and he feels it is important for there to be conversation between himself and the owners about what the institutional position will be on the subject.
Additionally, Manfred stated via Purdum that he has talked to commissioners in other leagues on the subject of legalized sports betting but will be leaving it to them to make a public statement on the matter. He does recognize that every commissioner would like to have a better understanding of sports betting legalization. Apparently individuals have been assigned in the organizations to study the issues to gain knowledge on the subject as well.
It will be interesting to see how the MLB handles the push for sports betting in the US, especially considering the past history of the sport when it comes to sports betting.
