Monday Night Football: New York Giants at San Francisco 49ers

OK, if you are a fan of either of these teams, this is a game to watch for you. But, if you’re not and your team played Sunday or had a bye week, this may be tough to view. A pair of teams with a lot of struggles and injuries do not make for a great matchup. At least with the horrid air conditions and wildfires happening in the area the game is still able to played (there were questions of moving or cancelling it).

Nick Mullens, the new 49ers QB, adds an interesting twist as he destroyed the Raiders in primetime last week. After a long week and three days to prepare, he’s looking for more. Eli may be on his last legs on the other side.

Giants

Averaging almost 300 yards per game this year, those numbers say nothing about the season Eli has had. He’s averaging one touchdown per game (eight on the year), and has tossed six picks. He has taken 31 sacks, and just has not been getting it done, though he has been overly used as the team’s scapegoat. Saquon Barkley (4.7 ypc, 519 yds, 5 TD’s, 58 REC, 497 yards, 2 TD’s) has looked like a legit star at the RB spot, as he and OBJ will form quite the tandem for the years to come. But again, this has not helped them win any games. OBJ has 61 catches for 785 yards and 2 TD’s, but things need to get better.

Their pass rush has been horrible, and recorded only ten sacks this year, while they have picked off only four passes from opposing QB’s. They decided to trade Damon Harrison and Eli Apple at the deadline this year, and it doesn’t even seem they are going to be missed, based on their poor performance as a unit this year. They are missing JPP, and have a lot to work on.

49ers

The loss of Jimmy G has been tough to overcome, but their QB’s have tossed 16 TD passes to just 10 INT’s this year. Nick Mullens shredded the Raiders in place of CJ Beathard, who had actually been playing very well. Matt Breida, Alfred Morris, and Raheem Mostert (now out with a broken arm) have helped the team to 134.7 rushing yards per game, looking sensational in the absence of big FA signing Jerick McKinnon. George Kittle is looking like the next Travis Kelce, and they have looked competitive most weeks.

One of the worst teams in the league with tegard to forcing turnovers, they have picked off just two passes. But, they have recorded 24 sacks, and put a lot of pressure on opposing QB’s. Against the horrid Giants O-Line they should be expected to record quite a few sacks.

Mullens Gets His 2nd Straight Win

Yeah, sorry Giants. Their only W of the year will remain from their game against the Texans.

And with every loss, we wonder if we have seen the last of Eli. Let the questions continue. Mullens gets a second straight W with his strong effort.
