A Drake University student is suing the university after he said a men’s basketball coach told the player that shot him to deny involvement. Tremell Murray was allegedly told to say he had nothing to do with the incident after shooting Nathaniel Miller Jr. in the head.
Murray had the gun legally when he accidentally shot Miller in the head on August 31, 2019. Before the police arrived, Miller said that a basketball coach arrived and told Murray to deny involvement. He told police that Miller had slipped on the floor and hit his head.
Drake coach Darian DeVries has yet to comment, but is not named in the lawsuit. Murray only played five games last year due to a knee injury but had a very successful freshman campaign the year before.
The Missouri Valley Conference and Drake have not announced any punishments or suspensions from the matter. Murray did plead guilty to making a false report to police and illegal discharge of a firearm in city limits. He was placed on probation and a suspended 30-day jail sentence.
