The second game of the NCAA Tournament will take place late Tuesday as the Colorado State Rams take on the Virginia Cavaliers. The winner of this game will take on the Tennessee Volunteers as part of the Midwest Region. This game will be held in Dayton.
The Colorado State Rams come into the game with a 24-10 record. The Rams were one of the six teams out of the Mountain West Conference to get into the big dance. The Rams tied for sixth in the conference with their 10-8 conference mark. Colorado State fell in the conference tournament to New Mexico.
For Virginia, they are 23-10 coming into this game. The Cavaliers finished third in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings. They trailed North Carolina and Duke in the conference. The Cavaliers fell in the conference tournament to the eventual ACC Tournament champion North Carolina State WolfPack.
The Colorado State Rams are -1.5 favorites over Virginia in this game.
Rams from the Mountain West Conference
At one point this season, the Colorado State Rams were 19-5. They split their last ten games, and were fortunate to get into the big dance. The Rams were not super competitive in the loss on Friday to New Mexico. That came after wins over San Jose State and Nevada. That ended their four game winning streak.
Colorado State is scoring 76.4 points per game. The Rams are making nearly 49% of their shots on the season. The top scorer for the Rams has been Isaiah Stevens, with 16.5 points per game. The Rams have four guys scoring double digits per game.
Colorado State won their first nine games of the season. The first loss for the Rams came on December 9th to Saint Mary’s. That was the lone non conference loss for the Rams all season.
Cavaliers Out of Atlantic Coast Conference
The Virginia Cavaliers are not too far removed from being national champions. This is a program that still knows how to win tournament games. The Cavaliers started the season with four straight wins, with their first loss coming to Wisconsin. The Cavaliers also lost at Memphis before Christmas.
The Cavaliers are scoring just 63.6 points per game. That is one of the worst in all of College Basketball, and in the NCAA Tournament. The top scorer for the Cavaliers has been Reece Beekman. Beekman is just one of two players for the Cavaliers scoring double digits per game. The other was Isaac McKneely.
Virginia lost at Duke to start the month, and then finished the regular season against Georgia Tech winning by 15. In the ACC Tournament, the Cavaliers beat Boston College by six and then fell to the Wolf Pack by 8.
Cavaliers Slow Down Rams
The Virginia Cavaliers defense against the Colorado State Rams offense. The Rams can score, but have not seen a defense like Virginia. We like Virginia to win this game, and move on to face Texas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Take Virginia +1.5 as the underdog on Tuesday!
