This past Monday, United States District Judge Michael Shipp was due to announce his decision on legalized sports gambling in the state of New Jersey, but has since put this ruling on hold. An extension was granted so that both sides of the subject can have more time to file additional briefs before a ruling is made.
According to a report at the Salt Lake Tribune, the Judge will be hearing oral arguments on the last day of October. After hearing arguments for both sides of the sports betting issue, he will then make a ruling. The decision will be on whether or not his 2013 order will permit the state to offer sports betting as long as the option is not regulated by the state.
The issue of sports betting is a long drawn-out subject in the state of New Jersey. In 2011, voters of the state approved the legalization of sports gambling in a nonbinding referendum. By early 2012, Chris Christie, the Governor of the state, has signed the sports betting bill into law. It was then a few months later the NCAA and professional sports leagues decided to sue to try and stop the action from taking place.
In 2013, Shipp ruled that the federal law that restricts sports gambling to specific states in the US is constitutional. A permanent injunction was then issued, which stopped NJ from implementing the new sports betting law.
The state tried to appeal but the US Supreme Court did not take on the case. In 2014, Christie vetoed a bill that would have repealed the prohibition of sports betting in the state. But by September, he had decided to order the attorney general’s office of the state to not prosecute racetracks or casinos if they began to offer sports betting, without regulation by the state.
So for now, the state has to wait a few more weeks before finding out if sports betting will be allowed or if the state will be back to square one, with no options for sports betting in the state.
