It’s the Yankees and Mets in the final game of a quick two-game series at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The Mets won the first game of the series and are now 47-53 on the season. That still remains fourth place in the National League East. The loss for the Yankees moved them to 53-48 on the season.
The Yankees are the favorites in this game. They come into this game at -155, while the Mets are +135. The total for this game on Wednesday is 8.5 runs.
Mets Look to Finish Small Sweep
In the win on Tuesday, the Mets saw Daniel Vogelbach and Pete Alonso hit home runs. In fact, Alonso hit two of them. He now has a team lead of 28 home runs on the season. Alonso also drives in five runs in the game. The Mets got a great start from their veteran Justin Verlander. The Mets have now won two of the first three games against the Yankees this season.
The Mets are 24-31 away from home. The win was also their 5th win in the last eight games. The offense for the Mets continues to be average at best. The Mets are hitting .237, while they have scored 444 runs on the season. On the pitching side, their 4.41 earned run average is 19th in baseball.
Jose Quintana will take the mound for the New York Mets. After pitching with the Cardinals last season, Quintana was signed by the Mets but missed the entire first half of the season. He came back on July 20th and threw five innings, allowing six hits and two runs, but took to the loss to the White Sox.
Yankees Seeking to Bounce Back
The New York Yankees are still without their slugger Aaron Judge. At this point, the team is not sure when the star right fielder will return. The Yankees need his bat, as they have turned into one of the worst-hitting teams in the league without him. The team has a batter average of .231, which is only better than Oakland. Gleybar Torres is the top hitter at .264.
In the Yankees‘ last four wins, they are scoring six runs per game. In the last four losses, including last night’s game, they are scoring less than three per game.
Many are intrigued by what the Bronx Bombers will do with the trade deadline less than a week away. Will the Yankees look to improve their lineup? Or will the team stay status quo, knowing that they have a long way to go to reach the postseason?
Carlos Rodon will pitch for the Yankees. Rodon is much like Quintana; he also missed the first half of the season outside of one start. Rodon returned on July 7th against the Cubs. Since he has returned, Rodon is 0-3 with a 7.36 earned run average. In 14.2 innings this season, he has allowed 12 earned runs.
Mets Finish the Job
Despite poor play this season, the Mets know they could salvage a little with back-to-back wins over the Yankees. The Yankees have not played very consistent baseball and seem to be slipping back each week.
Look for the Mets to win this game as the underdog on Wednesday. Take the New York Mets +135 over the New York Yankees.
