The NFL world is abuzz with everything that’s happening away from the field right now. Some players are speaking out, and others are speaking to their teammates, as there is undoubtedly a connection between the league and protests on city streets, especially as it relates to Colin Kaepernick.
Nevertheless, we will try to get caught up on all of the NFL news that’s related to on-field matters.
We Can Work It Out
There’s no doubt that George Kittle is one of the best tight ends in the NFL right now, and he’s hoping to soon be paid like one. The 49ers are reportedly trying to free up cap space to give Kittle the kind of contract he deserves.
However, the 49ers and Kittle’s agent could still be far apart on what constitutes fair, as his agent is talking up Kittle as the most unique and well-rounded tight end in the NFL.
Sweating It Out
The Raiders will be playing their home games in Las Vegas for the first time in 2020, at least they hope they will be. Currently, there is no guarantee that construction will be completed on Allegiant Stadium in time for the season.
Several construction workers have been forced to stop working after being diagnosed with COVID-19. Team owner Mark Davis is implying that it could be a close call whether the stadium is completed on time.
On the bright side, the Raiders are on the road for their first two preseason games. There’s also a chance that fans won’t be allowed to attend games during the preseason, which could create a little more time.
Let’s Hear It
With uncertainty over whether or not fans will be in NFL stadiums this fall, DeSean Jackson has proposed that players wear microphones if they have to play in empty stadiums. Jackson’s Philadelphia teammate Lane Johnson is also on board with the idea after the two spoke publicly via YouTube.
“I know in the trenches it gets crazy, and I know out there on the outside it gets crazy too with the conversations we are going back and forth on,” said Jackson.
As of right now, the NFL plans to start the season on time with fans in attendance. But if that changes, Jackson’s idea could add to the experience of watching from home.
Off-Field Injury Report
Raiders rookie Henry Ruggs III suffered a non-football injury over the weekend while moving some of his belongings into a trailer. According to his father, he had an open wound on his thigh when “the trailer just kind of pinned him against a car or a wall or something.”
The severity of the injury isn’t clear, although Ruggs is currently walking on crutches. The Raiders are aware of the injury but aren’t commenting further on the status of the wide receiver who was selected 12th overall in this year’s draft.
Fight of His Life
We end with some unfortunate news, as former Broncos and Hall of Fame running back Floyd Little has been diagnosed with cancer. He was a five-time Pro Bowler in his nine seasons with the Broncos and is a member of both the pro and college football Hall of Fames.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to cover Little’s medical costs for what the page describes as a “treatable but aggressive form of cancer.”
