So far, so good, through the opening five games for the No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners, who are doing nothing but win. Jalen Hurts came to the Sooners to help his team win, and that is exactly what has happened. They are winning games by an average of 34 points and look to keep that going against a tough Longhorns group. This is a game that many have penciled in on their schedule to make time to watch.
No. 11 Texas, on the other hand, has taken a loss so far but has been playing extremely effectively on both sides of the ball. Sam Ehlinger has been even more impressive than Hurts has this year, slinging touchdown passes left, right and center. The list of injuries for the Longhorns is rather large, but the team is continuing to push through as coach Tom Herman is doing all that he can to keep this team a winner. We are in for a treat in this game.
The spread for the matchup favors Oklahoma by 11 points, with the over/under set at 75.
Sooners Looking To Move Into Top Five
A strong performance on Saturday from Oklahoma could get it into the top five of the national rankings, and that is what it will be looking to do. Hurts has completed 75.2 percent of his passes, with 14 touchdowns to just two interceptions. He is also leading the team in rushing yards with 499, while adding seven more touchdowns on the ground, giving him 21 total on the year.
This has worked with flying colors, and he is hoping to win the QB battle with Ehlinger, which promises to be an electric one. Trey Sermon and Rhamondre Stevenson have combined for nine additional rushing touchdowns, giving the team 17 total.
The Sooners have been applying a lot of pressure against the run, with four different players recording at least three tackles for loss. They have picked off opposing QB’s four times while recovering two fumbles. They have to apply pressure and shut down the receiving game as much as they possibly can.
Longhorns Try To Play Spoiler
It is no surprise that Ehlinger has been torching opposing defenses this year. He played some great football in 2018 and has only improved further, his draft stock continuing to soar. He is completing 69.4 percent of his passes, and he’s thrown for 1,448 yards and 17 TDs, being picked just twice. Ehlinger has added three additional scores on the ground, ranking as the team’s third-leading rusher. The Longhorns will need Keaontay Ingram, averaging roughly 4.9 yards per carry, to bust out this week to give the offense a new dimension. They will have a hard time consistently moving the ball, so if they can start strong, it will bode well.
Look for Joseph Ossai and Ta’quon Graham to lead the pressure up front. The Texas secondary has also been tremendous this year, picking off nine passes through five games. If the Longhorns can get their hands on a few Hurts passes, things will go well.
