The St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres are set to continue their three-game series on Tuesday night after the Cards took the series opener on Monday 6-3. At home, the Cardinals are a slight favorite with a -125 moneyline compared to San Diego’s moneyline of +105. There is also an over/under of 8.5 runs.
With Monday’s win, the Cards have now won three of their last four and seven of their last 10 games. St. Louis has been holding steady but is still behind Milwaukee in the NL Central. The Cards are currently four games off the pace.
Of course, the Padres are in a similar position, sitting three games behind the Dodgers in the NL West. The difference is that after a stretch of eight wins in nine games earlier this month, the Padres have lost four of their last six games. While they are still 12 games over .500 on the season, San Diego is just 6-7 when facing teams with a winning record.
Can You Snell It?
Blake Snell will try to get himself on track on Tuesday when he makes his third start of the season. After missing the first part of the season with an injury, the lefty is 0-2 with an ERA of 6.00 in his two starts. The good news is that Snell has 12 strikeouts in nine innings, although he’s hurt himself with five walks and has given up a home run in each of his first two starts.
Meanwhile, the San Diego offense has endured a little bit of a slump lately. The Padres have scored three runs or less in 10 of their last 13 games, which means they’ve needed excellent pitching in order to win games. Even Manny Machado and Eric Hosmer have cooled off over the past week, with most of San Diego’s regulars outside of Jurickson Profar in a little bit of a slump.
The Wright Way
Snell and the Padres will be opposed by veteran Adam Wainwright, who will make his 10th start of the season on Tuesday. In his first nine starts of 2022, Wainwright is 5-4 with a 312 ERA. While his strikeout numbers are way down, Wainwright is still finding ways to be effective and has won three of his last four starts.
The Cardinals should also feel good about where they are offensively, scoring at least five runs in seven of their last 11 games. Paul Goldschmidt might be the hottest hitter in baseball right now, batting .444 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs for an OPS of 1.401 over his last 13 games. Even with Nolan Arenado in a huge slump right now, Goldschmidt, Harrison Bader, and others have stepped up to lead the St. Louis lineup.
Chirp, Chirp
On paper, the Padres are a quality team and one of the best road teams in the majors this year. But with Snell still trying to get going and their sluggish lineup facing a crafty starter like Wainwright, there is a lot working against them in this game. Bet on the Cardinals to beat the Padres for the second straight day on Tuesday.
