Friday’s MLB schedule is punctuated by a showdown between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. Despite the Phillies taking the first game of the series 9-7 on Thursday, the Dodgers are massive favorites on Friday with a moneyline of -235 compared to Philly’s moneyline of +190. There is also an over/under of 7.5 runs.
The Dodgers find themselves in a little bit of a slump lately. Los Angeles dropped two of three games in Pittsburgh earlier this week, so after losing on Thursday as well, the Dodgers have lost three of their last four games. That has caused their lead in the NL West to drop to just one game.
Meanwhile, the Phillies are still trying to work their way back to .500 after a sluggish start to the season. Philly began the month of May with a four-game losing streak. But the Phillies have won four of their last six games since then, so things might be trending in the right direction, although Philly’s schedule for the rest of the month is brutal.
Give It Up for Gibson
Kyle Gibson will try to keep the ball rolling for the Phillies on Friday. He’s been one of the team’s stars this season, going 3-1 with a 2.94 ERA over his first six starts. The Phillies have gone 4-2 in his starts this season, although both of those losses have come on the road.
Fortunately for Gibson, he might be able to count on a little run support on Friday. The Phillies scored nine runs on Thursday, doing so for the second time in four games. Going back to the end of April, the Phillies have scored at least four runs in 12 of their last 16 games, with five players already hitting at least five home runs.
Just What the Doctor Ordered
With the Phillies starting to struggle, they will be relieved to send Clayton Kershaw to the mound on Friday. The team’s longtime ace has been brilliant early in 2022, going 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA over five starts. The southpaw tossed seven scoreless innings in his last start, allowing just two runs over his last 18 innings.
Meanwhile, scoring runs usually isn’t a problem for the Dodgers, who are averaging five runs per game during the month of May. To be fair, the likes of Cody Bellinger, Justin Turner, and Max Muncy have all underperformed this year. But Freddie Freeman has been able to anchor the lineup while Trea Turner and Mookie Betts have also provided a spark.
Phillies/Dodgers Betting Prediction
Conventional wisdom says that the Dodgers aren’t going to stay in a slump for long, especially with Kershaw getting the start on Friday. But the Phillies have created plenty of momentum of their own and also have an ace on the mound Friday night.
Gibson should be able to give the Phillies a chance to win, and considering how lopsided the odds are in this game, there is a ton of value in picking the Phillies to win as underdogs because such a result isn’t as far fetched as the odds would indicate.
