The top ranked team in College Basketball will be in action on Friday in a conference game. The Purdue Boilermakers head to Evanston Illinois to battle the Northwestern Wildcats. Purdue, at 7-0 gained the top spot in the rankings following their tournament title in Hawaii. The Boilermakers won back to back games against Tennessee and Marquette to claim the crown. Since returning, Purdue topped Texas Southern by 32 points.
For Northwestern it;s been a solid start for the Wildcats. They are 5-1 on the season, and coming off a 22 point win at home over Northern Illinois. The lone loss for the Wildcats this season came to Mississippi State, out of the SEC.
The Purdue Boilermakers are -7.5 on the road at Northwestern. The total for this game is set at 129.5.
Boilers Leading the Big Ten Charge
Matt Painter and his Purdue Boilermakers are the favorites to take down the Big Ten conference. The Boilermakers and Nebraska are the lone two teams in the conference without a loss heading into December. Purdue had as good of a resume as any team in the nation with wins over Gonzaga, Tennessee and Marquette.
The elephant in the room of losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament is still out there for this team. The Boilers look to get past that with their ability to score, and their fantastic defensive effort. Purdue is scoring 84.1 points and allowing opponents to score just 63.6 per game.
Zach Edey is one of the top candidates for the National Player of the Year award. The big man is playing just over 27 minutes per game, and scoring 21.9 points per game. Guard Braden Smith is adding 13 points per game, and dishing out 6.7 assists per game.
Wildcats Looking for Huge Upset
The Northwestern Wildcats are looking to pull a massive upset to start conference play. The Wildcats will bring an offense that is scoring 70.7 points per game to the game. Boo Buie is the leading scorer with 18.5 points per game. In the win over Northern Illinois. Buie led the game with 23 points.
Brooks Barnhizer and Ryan Lanborg are also adding double digit scoring per game. They are both playing 32+ minutes per game. Barnhizer is at 15.3 points per game, while Langborg is at 10.8.
The Wildcats five wins this season have come over Binghamton, Dayton, Western Michigan, Rhode Island and Northern Illinois. The Wildcats will host Detroit and Chicago State, before going to DePaul in their next three games. The Wildcats also will take on Arizona State and Jackson State before New Years.
Wildcats Hang in; Boilers Win
The Northwestern Wildcats are scrappy and will play hard. They are going to be at home, and expect a big crowd. The students are still in session, and will be ready to see the top team in the country in action. The Wildcats are going to cover the spread in this game, but in the end, Purdue comes away with a road win. Take Northwestern +7.5, but the Boilermakes sneak out of town with a win.
