Spain vs Netherlands: 2014 World Cup Betting Preview and Pick

108501Spain and the Netherlands will be facing off on the second match day of the World Cup, June 13th. Their opening Group B match will be one of the most highly anticipated of the entire first round and will see both teams eager to walk away with three points.

There is no denying that both these sides are favorites to move on to the round of 16 which means their opening group match is that much more important.  It is also why it’s probably one of the toughest matches to bet as the odds don’t favor bettors all that much.  We will try to help with that decision with our analysis of this game.

Match Preview

Team Spain >> -121 (-.5) and -119 Moneyline at 5Dimes.eu

The Spanish are heading to Brazil looking to defend their 2010 title and assert their dominance in yet another international competition. Spain plays with such grace and elegance that the pace at which they play is often not even taken into consideration by opposing defenses who are, quite frankly, more concerned with figuring out where the ball is going to go next than they are with figuring out how to stop it.

The Spanish midfield plays host to some of the best talents in the world, including journeymen Xavi Hernandez and Xabi Alonso. To put it simply, opposing teams will be forced to play a near flawless match if they want even a slight chance of knocking Spain off their throne, or even taking a point from them.

Team Netherlands >> +106 (+.5) and -448 Moneyline at 5Dimes.eu

While Spain may be favorites to win Group B outright, the Netherlands will have something to say about that straight from their opening match. The Dutch qualified for Brazil without too much trouble at all and are looking like an even stronger team than the one that finished second four years ago in South Africa.

Robin van Persie, especially in the Dutch’s match against Spain, will need to be in top form and find himself on the scoring end of a majority of the Netherlands’ goals. Like Spain, the Netherland also have a solid midfield that is just brimming with both talent and depth. From the looks of it, this match is going to be decided by the team who more dominantly establishes themselves in the middle third of the pitch.

Betting Tips

To put it simply, most bookmakers are siding very favorably with the Spanish in their opening match. Unlike what is probably going to be the case in other opening matches, the Spanish and Dutch will more than likely not be affected by pre or early match jitters. Their players are accustomed to playing at the highest club levels in the world and though the World Cup is a competition unlike any other, it is nothing that a majority of these players have no seen before.

Bovada currently lists Spain as slight favorites at -125 on the moneyline, while the Dutch come in at +400 and a draw at +240. I have no qualms with taking Spain in this match, but the bet I really like is the over/under of only 2 goals. This even money over/under pays -110 both ways, and I envision a scenario where more than 2 goals will easily be scored. Plus, the even money over/under offers you the possibility to push should only two total goals be scored.
